The UKRI EDI strategy states that they will use their funding, strategies, policies and processes to support the diversity of people, talent and ideas needed for world-leading research and innovation. Improving migration routes for highly skilled researchers and innovators to move to the UK is a key objective of the People & Culture strategy.

UKRI published a Global Mobility evidence report in 2023, which identified a number of gaps in what evidence exists in the context of global researcher mobility. At the time of the report, no evidence could be identified on how diverse our international workforce is in the UK.

UKRI have commissioned the EDI Caucus to address one of those gaps – looking at diversity of globally mobile researchers and the impact of UK immigration policy on groups with protected characteristics. This information will help UKRI understand where UKRI, the UK government and the UK’s research & innovation sector should focus attention to better support a diverse and inclusive visa and immigration system for researchers, and will enable them to identity and prioritise interventions.

EDICa put out a call for evidence in March 2024 followed by a workshop with some stakeholders. 80 people with lived experience; 24 people who support or hire people needing visas responded to our call for evidence. We will publish findings when we have produced the report and had approval from our funders.
