Literature Review & Black Women Academics’ Experience
A case study of using literature review to study Black women academics’ experience in the UK.
Date: 4th September 2025 13:00-14:00 BST
Join us for the fifth seminar in our series looking at innovative approaches to research in equity, diversity and inclusion.
“A dearth of literature exists on Black women academics’ experience in UK universities. This lacunae in research mirrors the lived experiences of many Black women academics: feeling silenced whilst simultaneously experiencing the strain of hypervisibility in their academic roles.” So write Dr Yaz Osho and Dr Naomi Alormele in their article “Negotiated spaces: black women academics’ experiences in UK universities” (https://doi.org/10.1007/s10734-024-01279-x ), which reviews literature in the field and identifies several points for action for the higher education sector.
Dr Osho will touch on the value of the literature review, its methods and limitations, while sharing findings from the paper.
Dr Yaz Osho is Principal Lecturer and Director of Academic Professional Development at CETI (the Centre for Education & Teaching Innovation). Her research interests include: the Black awarding gap; inclusive teaching strategies and non-traditional students; Black academics’ experience in HE; ethnic entrepreneurship and widening participation and entrepreneurship education.
