Paid research internship
£23,881 pro rata
4 weeks full-time equivalent. Flexible working, part-time, hybrid or in-person
Heriot-Watt University, EDICa’s host institution, is funding three internships over the lifetime of the project.
Our third and final internship is now open for applications. There is flexibility over start and end dates, the number of hours per week, and the timing of those hours. There is also flexibility over remote-working within the UK, hybrid, or coming in to the Edinburgh Business School office space where there would be a dedicated desk with the team.
Our first intern, Beth Wedgwood, spent her internship period working on the data collection for the menstrual health study, contributing to the following reports:
Recommendations for improving support for researchers managing menstrual health
Beth presented in one of our seminars on the study of neurodivergent women managing their menstrual health. She also helped us up our game in social media and comms, starting our Instagram account. Beth was then offered additional contracts as a Research Assistant that arose as EDICa was commissioned with additional research. Beth is currently working full-time as a research assistant on the DICE project (Disability Inclusive Careers in Engineering and sciences). Before this, she had been contracted to work on our UKRI-commissioned study:
An appraisal of changes to the UKRI Standard Terms and Conditions of Training Grant for disabled and carer doctoral students: Mode of study, challenges, drivers and mitigation of challenges, and the suitability of training grants to address these challenges.
You can read Beth’s reflections on her internship in a blog she wrote for us: click here.
Our second intern, Rebecca Kennedy, also spent her internship period with us working on that UKRI study, and can also be seen as a listed co-author on the above report. She is currently working as a Research Assistant at the Ministry of Justice.
These internships are intended to offer a taste of the research career to people who are under-represented in the research & innovation sector. If you are interested and would like to speak to Beth Wedgwood off the record regarding what it is like working with the EDICa team, please contact b.wedgwood@hw.ac.uk.
This current internship is seeking someone with skills in both quantitative and qualitative analysis. We have intentionally restricted our criteria to those skills which are essential. If you have those essential skills and would like to try working within a research team, we encourage you to apply. If you are a British Sign Language or International Sign user and would like to learn more about the position, please contact j.napier@hw.ac.uk for a chat.
We will be providing interview questions in advance, and our interviews will be on Teams – or Zoom if needed. Once appointed, IT hardware and software will be provided to the intern by Heriot-Watt University.
Former recruiter and Senior Project Support Officer Fenella Watson gives her top three tips for applying: ” 1) Do some research on what EDICa does, and bring some of that into your cover letter. 2) Write a professional cover letter – there are templates available online. 3) Address each of the criteria in the job advert and explain to the reader what previous experience you have that shows you meet that criteria. It might not be in your CV, but at this stage of career, it’s okay to bring in volunteer experience, or undergraduate learning or project work. Above all… please leave out your date of birth, your age, your sex/gender, and your photo. These personal details are not expected in UK recruiting.”
