Menstruation at the Margins: Panel Discussion
Five researchers discuss menstruation in the workplace, focusing on under-explored perspectives.
Date: 24th September 2025 16:00-17:30 BST; 11:00-12:30 EDT; 08:00-09:30 PDT
This panel is hosted by the Centre for the Transformation of Work, Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University.
Scholarship on menstruation in the workplace has gained momentum in recent years, yet it remains underexplored within the broader disciplinary ambit of gender studies. However, as workplace inclusivity continues to evolve, it is crucial that attention be given to the needs of menstruators– particularly those at the intersections of disability, neurodivergence, and gender identity, as well as those working in male-dominated or challenging work environments. This panel brings together a cross-cultural body of research—spanning UK, India, and Nigeria—focused on expanding critical understanding of menstruation in the workplace across diverse workspaces and borders. The panel will examine how menstruation intersects with various workplace dynamics, such as policy gaps, stigma, and health-related barriers. By centring these concerns, this panel aims to contribute to the growing body of research advocating for comprehensive, inclusive workplace interventions that support menstruators in all their diversity. As the papers will demonstrate, there is an urgent need to address the specific challenges employed menstruators face particularly within organisational structures that often overlook or marginalise their experiences.
The studies presented in this panel highlight gaps in current literature, particularly in relation to disabled and gender diverse menstruators, as well as those working in male-dominated, high-pressure and remote environments. Collectively, the presenters in this panel will examine how gendered organisational structures influence professional identities and career progression, alongside the challenges faced by disabled, deaf and neurodivergent workers, as well as transmasculine and gender non-conforming individuals. The presentations in this panel emphasise the need for inclusive workplace interventions that address the specific needs of menstruating workers, particularly those navigating complex health and identity factors. The panel also highlights the experiences of lower-paid workers and transmasculine menstruators, focusing on how the lack of inclusive HR policies, accessible facilities, and gender-affirming healthcare benefits impact workers’ well-being, treatment decisions, and job performance. By bringing together these diverse perspectives, the panel aims to spark critical conversations on creating more inclusive, supportive workplaces for menstruators. The aim is to bolster scholarship and an evidence base to promote workplace cultures that are not only inclusive but also actively responsive to the diverse needs of menstruators, ensuring all employees can fully thrive in their professional environments.
